Local young athletes who are part of the Western Sydney Academy of Sport (WSAS) program were congratulated during a special ceremony at The Hills Shire Council on Thursday, June 2.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Peter Gangemi presented 16 elite Hills athletes, aged between 13-18 years of age, and who attend the WSAS for either golf, netball, softball, rugby union, BMX racing and triathlon with a Certificate of Achievement.
Mayor Gangemi said The Hills Shire Council is a proud supporter of WSAS and that he was also pleased to see so many Hills locals selected into Academy programs.
“The WSAS is so beneficial to helping our talented young athletes to progress within their discipline, as well as providing them with quality coaching and training,” Mayor Gangemi said.
“As our athletes move through the program, their personal growth and development also builds and transforms positively, which is especially important for preparing them for their future career, whether that be in sport or a different pursuit.
“I congratulate our athletes on their success, and I can’t wait to see what they achieve in the future” Mayor Gangemi added.
WSAS CEO Martin Bullock said Council has been a strong supporter and advocate of their athletes and coaches since the Academy’s inception in 2004.
“In that time over 500 talented pre-elite level athletes have represented The Hills LGA, which is testament to Council’s focus on sport as a highly significant aspect of health and lifestyle,” Mr Bullock added.
The WSAS is a non-for-profit community-based organisation that provides quality development training programs for talented young athletes across a wide range of sport disciplines, so that they can reach their potential.
Their programs are holistic based and include both technical and skill development, as well as being educational.
The Hills Shire is one of seven Local Government Areas (LGAs) – including Blacktown, Blue Mountains, Fairfield, Hawkesbury, City of Parramatta and Penrith – that make up WSAS’s catchment.
