Ellen José Art Award supports young women artists

The Ellen José Art Award for young women is a unique triennial award, the first of its kind, encompassing a $15,000 non-acquisitive prize, designed to support young female artists in the early stages of their career.

The award is a partnership between The Ellen José Memorial Foundation and Bayside City Council, held in honour of Ellen José (1951 – 2017), a pioneering indigenous artist, radical activist and social justice campaigner who lived in the Bayside suburb of Black Rock for over 25 years.

Co-founder of the Ellen José Foundation, and husband of the late Ellen José, Dr Joseph Toscano spoke of the significance of the award for young female artists.

“The award aims to promote and mentor young female artists during a critical time in their career when many abandon their dream of becoming a full-time artist,” Toscano said.

Six shortlisted artists will be invited to display in an exhibition at Bayside Gallery (2 July – 28 August) – Corner Wilson and Carpenter Street, Brighton. The $15,000 prize will be awarded at the official opening of the exhibition, Saturday 2 July. This year’s finalists are Moorina Bonini, Elham Eshraghian-Haakansson, Hannah Gartside, Nadia Hernández, Annika Romeyn and Emma Singer.

Bayside Mayor Cr Alex del Porto said the award is a fantastic opportunity to provide a financial boost to young female artists who face more barriers entering the art industry; and recognises its significance within the arts and culture and indigenous communities.

“By supporting this award, we aim to foster creative freedom and license for artists to gain recognition and professional development. This in turn, provides our community with creative spaces to enjoy and opportunities to gain a greater insight and appreciation of arts and culture,” Cr del Porto said.

The award will be judged by renowned industry experts: Artistic Director & CEO, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) Max Delany, and Associate Provost at the University of Melbourne, Professor Marcia Langton AM.
