Decorative road and footpath decals in and around the new shared zone in Commercial Place, Eltham, are proving to be a striking addition to the retail precinct.
Together with a reduced speed limit of 10km/h, the eye-catching artworks featuring the Eltham Copper Butterfly and the local flowering wattle have been designed to slow traffic in the shared zone and encourage more pedestrians into the area.
Associated works include landscaping and improved accessibility parking while new seating will arrive in September as part of the revamp of the street.
It’s just one of a number of projects across the Shire funded through the Victorian Government’s COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund.
The fund aims to help councils transform outdoor areas so Victorians can get out and support local businesses safely.
Nillumbik Mayor Frances Eyre said the events, performances, and beautification works funded through the Outdoor Activation Fund were a great way to bring people back to the Shire’s outdoor precincts.
“It’s been fantastic to see so many people out and about again,” Cr Eyre said.
“Our local traders and industries such as the creative arts have had it really tough over the past couple of years,” Cr Eyre said.
“These projects are a great way to bring people back to our townships in a safe way so they can shop local, and enjoy great food, arts and entertainment.”
Wingrove Ward Cr Geoff Paine said, “The new shared zone in Commercial Place supports our ongoing work to make the Eltham Activity Centre more pedestrian friendly and connected while reducing traffic congestion in the area.”
The Illuminate Eltham program, which is now on in Eltham Town Square featuring light installations by local artists and free activities, is also supported by the Outdoor Activation Fund.
Other projects as part of the program have included:
- Soundbite pop-up music events in Research and Hurstbridge in April and May
- Busk Stop pop-up busking performances across the Shire engaging 20 local musicians over three months
- New picnic tables installed across the Shire to support outdoor dining
- New trees and seating in Chute Street, Diamond Creek
- Resurfacing works and new shade sail at Diamond Creek Plaza
- Additional seating, lighting and new drinking fountain in Wattle Place, Hurstbridge
- Outdoor mural at Hurstbridge Basketball Stadium
- New street trees, asphalting works and footpath decals in Luck Street, Eltham.
