Four hockey teams from the Special School Sports Association have taken on teams from CFA/MFB (VicFire), Victoria Police (Wallopers), Ambulance Victoria and Hockey Victoria in a round of friendly matches at the Knox Regional Football Centre.
As part of the activity, the students from Emerson, Berendale, Ashwood and Sale specialist schools also learned about the roles each emergency service plays in the community.
In its second year, the competition aims to provide a space for the school teams to play competitively – something that can be difficult to find in club competition.
In addition to the matches, Scoresby Fire Brigade did a presentation and showed the players over a ‘big red truck’.
Rosebud Fire Brigade Station Officer and VicFire Hockey Club Secretary Paula Treacy said VicFire would definitely be taking part in the day next year.
“I think the emergency services personnel who take part get more out of it that the kids,” Paula said.
