Taking STEM studies to new heights, Flight Sergeant Daniel Hickey volunteered his time to support the St Philips Christian College Salamander Bay ‘Space Day’.
Delivering an informative presentation, followed by a space-themed craft activity building cube satellites, Flight Sergeant Hickey made an important contribution to the dynamic Space Day program: to actively engage junior students from kindergarten to Year 4 in their science studies.
An air surveillance operator and space instructor at Surveillance and Control Training Unit, Flight Sergeant Hickey said seeing the excitement of students as they discussed the topic of space was a special experience and it was a privilege to participate in the day.
“I was incredibly impressed by their enthusiasm and interest, with lots of insightful questions sparking great discussions amongst staff and students alike,” Flight Sergeant Hickey said.
With his involvement broadening the students’ perspectives, providing real-world insights into space study, surveillance, exploration and discovery, Flight Sergeant Hickey said he was pleased with the outcome.
“It was an honour to be a part of the college program and foster an interest in STEM-related disciplines and careers through early education and awareness,” Flight Sergeant Hickey said.
With the Space Day firmly established as a “great success”, college staff extended their “sincere thanks” to Flight Sergeant Hickey for his participation in delivering a unique educational experience for local students in the community.
