The wheels are in motion to strengthen relationships and communication channels between residents and Kempsey Shire Council with the Better Together Network.

Through the Network, Council and other service providers will inform and listen to the best and most trusted voices each of our communities. Those with the historical knowledge. The local leaders who have their finger on the pulse. Those who understand what their village needs in times of an emergency and how they could best take advantage of an opportunity.

As of Tuesday 30 August, Council has hosted community meetings to establish Better Together Networks around Stuarts Point, Gladstone and Smithtown, Kempsey’s CBD and South West Rocks.

What we’ve heard

Each community has had a great turnout at the meetings so far with individuals, community groups and businesses in attendance.

People are eager to work with Council to improve communications channels and map community assets to best prepare for future disasters.

What the community is expecting from us

Residents are keen to get ready for future disasters and are eager to have communication channels open between them and Council leading up to or during a crisis.

Council recognises that the community are the experts in their local areas and their expertise and local knowledge is key.

What’s next?

The findings from the meetings will be individually collated before Council returns to each Better Together Network to strengthen the information even further.

Council will look to see what actions can be put in place as soon as possible.

Who’s next?

Council is now setting sights on the Bellbrook and Thunggutti area for the Wednesday 31 August meeting, followed by Crescent Head on Thursday 1st September.

The Better Together Network will be expanded across the region and will take place in the new year.

Funded by Resilience NSW the Better Together Network will enable every Macleay community to be better prepared for disaster and more open to opportunities.
