Entries are now open for the Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art 2021 with more than $30,000 available in prizes.

The prestigious biennial acquisitive art prize is open to emerging and established artists working in any medium across Australia.

This year, artists are asked to respond to the theme Return.

There are prizes in two major categories:

  • Open Prize: $20,000 acquisitive
  • Local Prize: $10,000 acquisitive (local entries will automatically be considered for the Open category)

Also included will be a Mayor’s Award and People’s Choice Award.

The prize is presented in association with Montsalvat, and the Finalist Exhibition will be held at the Barn Gallery in May and June 2021, subject to any COVID-19 restrictions at that time.

Nillumbik Mayor Karen Egan, who also chairs Council’s Art and Cultural Advisory Committee, said Council was a leader in supporting contemporary visual art.

“Nillumbik is renowned for its vibrant arts community and this prize has a proud history in the Shire,” Cr Egan said.

“The acquisitive prize adds to the Nillumbik Shire Art Collection and builds on our reputation as a leading Australian arts destination.”

The Nillumbik Prize was established in 2003. Julia deVille was the 2019 Nillumbik Prize for Contemporary Art winner with her work As above, so below.

Entries can be in any medium but not limited to sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, textiles, photography, installation, sound digital, video and performative.

Entries can be submitted and close on Monday 30 November at midday with all finalists notified by Friday 18 December 2020.
