The Albanese Labor Government has opened a specialised Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain GP Clinic in Epping, Victoria, providing women with a one-stop option for diagnosis, intervention and treatment.
The Clinic is part of Labor’s 22 dedicated Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinics across Australia which was announced in a $58.3 million package for endometriosis and pelvic pain in the 2022-23 Budget.
It’s estimated that endometriosis affects at least 1 in 9 Australian women and has an extensive, devastating impact on the daily lives of sufferers, with people experiencing an unacceptable average of seven years before diagnosis. Pelvic pain can be similarly complex and debilitating, with the impact being felt beyond individuals as it is estimated to cost the Australian economy almost $10 billion a year.
Endometriosis can impact all facets of women’s lives – from their ability to work, exercise and socialise, their fertility and even their sex lives. Labor recognises the debilitating and often silent impact of endometriosis and pelvic pain and is taking action to support women through practical steps to improve diagnosis and treatment.
The Epping Endometriosis and Pelvic Pain Clinic will be based in Epping Plaza Medical and Dental Clinic and joins three other clinics across Victoria. Each Clinic is based on an existing GP practice with experience and expertise in women’s health, endometriosis and pain management.
Epping Plaza Medical and Dental Clinic received $700,000 over four years to begin a specialised service for two distinct patient groups: people diagnosed with endometriosis and individuals seeking a diagnosis for pelvic pain. The funds will be used to recruit specialised staff, including nurse practitioners and allied health professionals; improve facilities; and provide resources, training and development.
The Clinic is a crucial front door for women who need answers and support and where their concerns will be taken seriously. It brings the expertise they need under one roof.
