A virtual event was recently held to thank all of our VMOs for their ongoing commitment to Epworth and to announce the winners of the Epworth Medical Leaders Awards.
Hosted by A/Prof Luis Prado, Chief Medical Officer and Executive Director Academic and Medical Services, the evening featured a question and answer session with Epworth Sports and Exercise Physician Dr Peter Larkins and special guest AFL Chief Executive Officer, Gillon McLachlan.

Consultant Emeritus
Epworth appoints medical practitioners as Consultant Emeritus on their retirement in recognition of their long-distinguished service to Epworth and this year we recognise:
- Dr Alex Babarczy, Anaesthetics
- Prof Gab Kovacs, Obstetrics & Gynaecology
- A/Prof Barry Rawicki, Rehabilitation Medicine
- Prof Hatem Salem, General Medicine & Haematology
- Dr Peter Trembath, Respiratory Medicine

Peter J Dohrmann award: Dr Ashani Lecamwasam – Nephrology and General Physician
The Peter J Dohrmann award was established to recognise the significant contribution that Dr Peter Dohrmann made to Epworth during his 10 years of service as Executive Director Medical Services at Epworth and 25 years as a visiting neurosurgeon. The award includes a financial grant to undertake study and learning at another hospital or tertiary institution either in Australia or internationally.
Junior Doctor of the Year award: Dr Amrish Rajkomar – General Surgery
The Epworth Junior Doctor of the Year is awarded to a doctor in training in recognition of outstanding contribution to leadership and advocacy.
Liz Morton award for Clinical Supervisor of the Year: Mr Sonal Nagra – General and endocrine surgeon
The Epworth Clinical Supervisor of the Year award has been named in honour of the late Liz Morton, Epworth Group Manager, Medical Services. This prestigious award recognises a clinical supervisor nominated by the Epworth junior doctors for outstanding support, education and advocacy to junior doctors undertaking specialty training at Epworth.
Professor Geoffrey Metz award for Clinical Tutor of the Year: A/Prof Anastasia Chrysostomou – Nephrologist and Physician
The Professor Geoffrey Metz award for Clinical Tutor of the Year is named in recognition of the passion and dedication to the training and education of medical students at Epworth by Professor Geoffrey Metz. Epworth students were asked to nominate a clinical tutor for their outstanding teaching, support and inspiration to medical students.
