Equinix opens new US$54m data centre in Perth

Austrade

Perth’s growing importance as a strategic part of Australia’s internet infrastructure has prompted digital infrastructure company Equinix to open a new US$54 million data centre in the city.

The new International Business Exchange™ (IBX) facility, to be named P3, will be the US company’s third data centre in Perth and its 18th in Australia. It will enable Equinix to meet growing demand for digital infrastructure and low-latency networking capabilities in Western Australia among global and local organisations.

‘We’re thrilled to continue an with the planned addition of the PE3 IBX in Perth,’ says Guy Danskine, Managing Director, Equinix Australia. ‘Since entering Western Australia almost three years ago, we’ve seen substantial growth driven by the state’s digital economy.

‘The interconnection options available in PE3 will support our customers during their digital transformation journeys as they move their businesses closer to the edge and look to expand within Asia-Pacific and beyond.’

Perth’s advantage is its strategic location. It has direct connectivity to Southeast Asia via two subsea cable links, the Australia Singapore Cable and Indigo Cable. Both cables terminate directly inside the Equinix Perth campus, reducing the time it takes for data to move between Singapore and Australia by 50%.

With Australia and Singapore signing a Digital Economy Agreement to promote digital trade between the two countries, Equinix’s data centres in Perth are well placed to connect Australian organisations to Asia and beyond.

A third subsea cable is being built that will connect Perth to Oman, providing a second digital gateway to international markets.

The first phase of PE3 is due to open in Q4 2021.
