A man escaped from a police prisoner vehicle at Toowoomba yesterday.
Police will allege at 8:30am they were transporting several prisoners from Toowoomba to Brisbane for court purposes.
As the police prisoner van was travelling down the Range, one of the prisoners allegedly commenced kicking the door of the prisoner pods. The kicking was so extreme the officers decided to stop the vehicle as they believed the prisoner was trying to break out.
As they stopped the van, the prisoner who had damaged the internal pod, was able to escape from police.
The man ran up into bushland and police resources were deployed.
With the assistance of calls from the public, police were able to set up a cordon around East Street.
Multiple police resources were deployed to the cordoned area, including the dog squad who tracked the man to a house in East Street.
Police entered the house and located the man who had escaped through a window.
The man was then stopped by a police dog.
Police will further allege the man attempted to get into a number of houses and vehicles.
If anyone in the area notices that their house has been disturbed, they are encouraged to contact police.
The man had previously been remanded in custody for a number of property-related offences.
There were no injuries to any police officer or members of the public.
The man did receive a minor bite to his leg prior to his arrest.
A 29-year-old Fitzgibbon man was arrested and charged with escape lawful custody, three counts of enter premises with intent, two counts of trespass, and one count each of burglary, stealing and obstruct police. He is due to appear in the Toowoomba Magistrates Court today.
