EU 2040 emissions target welcomed by Climate Group

The Climate Group

Climate Group has welcomed plans from the EU Commission to reduce greenhouse gases economy-wide by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels.

These cuts are in line with scientific guidance but will require further discussions after the upcoming EU elections to finalise and decide on implementation – particularly in terms of how the cuts break down for each sector, including agriculture.

Jeroen Gerlag, Head of Climate Group Europe, said:

“The EU has boldly signalled its climate leadership through adopting targets to reduce EU emissions 90% by 2040. This move sends a strong message that the bloc is working towards a more sustainable future for all people.

“We know from Climate Group’s RE100 initiative that companies sourcing all their electricity from renewables represent a growing number of climate-forward organisations that want certainty in their EU operations. Supporting them in the transition to cleaner energy sources makes economic sense while being the better option for our global climate.

“After elections in June this summer it will be crucial that the Commission puts further plans in place to meet these targets and ensure the EU remains on track for net zero emissions by 2050.”
