Council has been announced as a finalist in the Cities Power Partnership’s fourth annual national Climate Awards for its innovative Low Carbon Energy Ecosystem project at the city’s Administrative Centre in Speers Point.
What began as a project to increase security and safety of Council vehicles through the installation of automatic gates, CCTV and new landscaping in a car park, resulted in the installation of a solar car park to increase Council’s energy capacity.
Environmental Systems Manager Karen Partington said receiving recognition as a finalist in the Cities Power Partnership Awards alongside local and state governments from across Australia is an enormous compliment for Council’s sustainability programs, initiatives and partnerships with the local community and industry.
“Council staff saw an opportunity to enhance the project through the installation of new solar PV and electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, providing energy resilience to the Administrative Centre and ensuring our organisation is ready for a growing fleet of electric vehicles,” Ms Partington said.
“This project is another example of Council’s sustainability achievements and initiatives to protect and conserve our unique landscape and support a diversifying economy.”
Award winners will be announced at a virtual award ceremony hosted by the ABC’s Craig Reucassel at 4pm on Wednesday 17 November.
