Civic Park and the University of Newcastle’s NUspace building will light up orange on 25 November as Novocastrians join the international community to confront violence against women in our communities.
Held on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the light installation will symbolise the start of 16 Days of Activism to End Violence Against Women – a global United Nations campaign. The theme for 2020 is Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!
The light installation is part of a new project, City Lights for Social Change, which has been organised by the University of Newcastle’s Gender Research Network and funded by the City of Newcastle’s Special Business Rate scheme.
In addition to the light installation, a public vigil will be livestreamed from Civic Park on the night of 25 November to remember victims of violence.
The Civic Park lighting infrastructure will become a permanent feature, allowing organisations to ‘light the park’ to raise awareness of different issues. This will serve not only as a practical way to discourage violence but as a permanent reminder that Newcastle stands for equity, safety and supporting the vulnerable in our community.
