Experts gather for koala workshop and Ministerial Roundtable

The Hon Sussan Ley MP
Minister for the Environment

Wildlife experts and koala conservation organisations will join me in Canberra on Wednesday for a koala workshop and Ministerial Roundtable to discuss both bushfire impacts and a range of issues affecting one of Australia’s most treasured national icons.

The workshop and roundtable will bring together zoos, wildlife carers and koala researchers.

As the Morrison Government implements its initial $50 million wildlife and habitat recovery package, this is an opportunity to focus on specific issues affecting koala populations across different parts of the country.

Australia’s Threatened Species Commissioner Dr Sally Box will host a panel of experts, and leading academics will present on koala conservation issues post the summer bushfires.

My focus will be on finding new opportunities for bringing communities together to support koala recovery.

The Morrison Government has already provided $3 million to support Queensland koala hospitals and committed $3 million for Koala habitat restoration in northern NSW and south-east Queensland.

With the guidance of the Wildlife and Threatened Species Bushfire Recovery Expert Panel established under Threatened Species Commissioner Dr Sally Box, we will continue to invest in strategies to protect our native wildlife and habitat.
