Delve into the rich history and untold stories of Blacktown City’s past in the 2023 Mayoral History Prize.
Entries are now open for the 2023 prize, and anyone with an interest in Blacktown City’s history and heritage is encouraged to enter, including high school students and members of community groups.
Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said: “For 16 years, the Mayoral History Prize has fostered a wider understanding of Blacktown City’s history.
“The prize celebrates the rich and diverse history of our City and its storytellers – ranging from the history of the Darug people, who have called this land home for more than 60,000 years, to the many diverse communities who have arrived here over the past 230 years.
“Local historians and storytellers play an important role in preserving this history for future generations and the prize provides a platform to share these stories from our City’s past.
“I especially invite entrants to explore Blacktown City’s Indigenous history and culture in their submissions and contribute to the rich collection of First Nations stories.”
Entries must focus on the history and heritage of the Blacktown City area. This can include European, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, or other cultural themes.
Entries can be submitted in a wide range of mediums, including: an essay, book, article, story, family/personal history, oral history interview, photograph, artwork or multimedia presentation.
Winners will receive a cash prize, with all entries to be included in the Local History Collection at Blacktown City Libraries.
Prizes will be awarded to winning entries in the following categories: 17 Years and Over, Years 10-12, Years 7-9 and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander entries.
