Extended cheers for Socceroos in World Cup

NSW Government

Hotels and clubs showing the FIFA World Cup match between Australia and Denmark have got football fans covered, with the NSW Government extending trading from midnight on Wednesday 30 November to 5am on Thursday 1 December.

Minister for Hospitality and Racing Kevin Anderson said fans at a range of venues will be able to watch the Socceroos go head-to-head with Denmark, with the match kicking off at 2am.

“The FIFA World Cup is one of the biggest global sporting events, with more than half the world tuning in for the last Cup in 2018,” Mr Anderson said.

“With these extended trading hours, fans will be able to gather at their local hotel or club to cheer the Socceroos to victory. “

Mr Anderson said there would be more opportunities for fans to support Australia, with trading set to be extended if Australia progresses past the group stage.

Extended trading will also be in place for the final, with venues able to open from 10pm on Sunday 18 December to 5am on Monday 19 December.

Since 2021, the NSW Government has implemented year-round trading hour extensions during major sporting and cultural events, helping to boost the 24-Hour Economy, create jobs and breathe life into local nightlife.

“This initiative isn’t just great news for fans, but venue owners and the hospitality workforce will be big winners too with more jobs and business opportunities created during special events,” Mr Anderson said.

“Supporting our night-time industries, including trading hour extensions for special events, is a key priority of the NSW Government with more trading extensions planned across summer.”

The extended trading hours apply only to drinks sold on premises, not takeaway alcohol sales.

Venues already approved to trade during or beyond the extended hours can operate as usual.

Hotels and clubs must still comply with any individual trading restrictions or other special conditions that apply to their liquor licence.

The NSW Government encourages fans to enjoy the game, drink responsibly and travel safely.

Extensions will apply on the below dates and times for venues showing live matches only if Australia is playing:

  • Sunday 4 December- Round of 16 – Match 50, trading extension between 5am and 10am
