Farmers for Climate Action (FCA) has welcomed the appointment of former ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Farmers’ Federation (NFF) CEO Tony Mahar to the role of Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner.
FCA CEO Natalie Collard said Mr Mahar had led for NFF with distinction for more than a decade.
“You can’t have an energy shift in regional Australia without regional Australians steering the ship,” Ms Collard said.
“We are thrilled that a regional and farm advocate will hold the position of Australian Energy Infrastructure Commissioner, ensuring the perspectives of regional Australia are central to the energy shift regional Australia hosts. Polling consistently shows the quiet majority of rural and regional Australians support the energy shift, so long as nature, community and farmers do well out of it. Mr Mahar is just the person to help ensure this energy shift goes smoothly.
“Mr Mahar oversaw the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Farmers’ Federation’s move to adopt the net zero 2050 climate policy, and we know we need deep pollution reduction this decade to protect our farmers and our food supply,” Ms Collard said.
“Mr Mahar has also attended COP climate conferences many times, and is deeply informed on both climate and agriculture. He understands that farmers consistently say climate change is the number one challenge they’re facing.”
