A highlight of Willoughby’s event calendar is making a triumphant return with Fauna Fair expected to attract more than 1,000 people to Willoughby Park on Sunday 28 August.

This year the theme of Fauna Fair will be “Connecting with Nature” and a diverse range of activities and stalls will add value to this popular event.

Fauna Fair will again feature the spectacular free flight bird shows and brilliant Australian wildlife exhibitions featuring a range of native creatures including mammals, reptiles, birds and frogs, as well as fun wildlife craft activities. Fair-goers can learn about environmentally friendly pest control and how to get involved in Council’s citizen science campaigns.

Three new exhibitors will join Fauna Fair for the first time – Australian Environmental Education, Reverse Garbage and Indigigrows.

Willoughby City Mayor Tanya Taylor said this year’s long-anticipated Fauna Fair was a not-to-be-missed opportunity, having experienced a two-year Covid hiatus.

“Willoughby is home to beautiful natural bushland which provides habitat to an abundance of native wildlife and animals,” Mayor Taylor said.

“Fauna Fair is an opportunity to build a connection with local wildlife, learn about their habitats and consider responsible lifestyle choices we can make to protect them.

“I’m proud to note this event will be free of single-use plastics, so make sure you bring your own reusable bottle, coffee cup and shopping bags.”

Fauna Fair was first launched in 2004 as an initiative to raise community awareness of newly declared Wildlife Protection Areas in the Willoughby Local Government Area.

Over the past 16 years, the Fair has reinforced the importance of issues including the value of trees, protecting waterways and marine life, native bees and wildlife rescue.

Activities include:

  • Live animal shows featuring native birds, reptiles and more
  • Information stalls on topics including wildlife, gardening, bushcare, citizen science, wildlife rescue, pets, sustainability and conservation
  • Information on how to get involved in your local community
  • Kid’s crafts and entertainment
  • Food, drinks, plants and fresh produce from Willoughby’s local Community Gardens will be on sale

Fauna Fair 2022 will run on Sunday, 28 August at Willoughby Park (McClelland Street, Willoughby) from 10am to 3pm.
