The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (FCFCOA) secures temporary court facilities at the Supreme Court of Tasmania in Burnie.

Chief Justice Alstergren said that he is delighted to confirm that the Courts have reached an agreement with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Tasmania, the Hon Alan Blow AO, enabling the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia to hold hearings in the Burnie courthouse as an interim measure. The Courts are hopeful that a permanent solution will be made available when the new Burnie Court facility is built in a few years’ time.

“The Supreme Court of Tasmania in Burnie provides a safe and appropriate facility for the people of Northern Tasmania in which to have their family law cases heard.

“Our courts are grateful to the Hon Chief Justice Blow and the Hon Justice Jago for their understanding and cooperation to address the situation. We look forward to continuing to work with them, together with the Commonwealth and Tasmanian Attorneys-General, to provide adequate space for the FCFCOA in the planning and development of the new court premises in Burnie.

Importantly, the Courts would also like to thank the Senators and MPs both State and Federal, the Burnie City Council Mayor, the Central Coast Council Mayor, council staff, the Law Society, Bar, Women’s Legal Service and Legal Aid for their support and assistance. Extensive consultation also included a number of community members who offered premises for consideration.

“The provision of legal services including court facilities is vital for access to justice for all Australians,” Chief Justice Alstergren said.

The first sitting week will be conducted the week commencing 28 August, followed by 9 October 2023.
