Rottnest Island’s status as a national tourism icon will grow the attraction’s appeal and meet the needs of growing visitor numbers.
Last year, Rottnest Island received $17.2 million funding through the Federal Government’s Tourism Icons Package, with Assistant Minister for Regional Tourism, Senator the Hon Jonathon Duniam, visiting Western Australia today to formally announce the details of the project.
Tourism Council WA recommended Rottnest Island to the Federal Government as one of the to enhance international, interstate and intrastate tourism.
“The funding to develop one of WA’s great tourism attractions, Rottnest Island, will enable Rottnest Island visitation to grow while protecting and enhancing its unique environment, culture and Aboriginal heritage,” Tourism Council WA CEO Evan Hall said.
“Rottnest Island is the first Western Australian tourism attraction to receive Federal investment, and we hope to see other attractions identified as Icons to grow visitation and regional dispersal.
“As outlined in Tourism Council WA’s policy document, there are a number of proposed experiences that will grow tourism numbers and year-round visitation for Perth and surrounds.”
The Tourism Icons Package initiative was announced in the 2019 Federal Budget, providing funding of $50 million over three years for investment in new iconic attractions which will help drive tourism across Australia.
