Round one of Fight for Success is underway with NSW Police and PCYC launching the youth-focused initiative in four locations across the state’s west and north.
Through the existing partnership with NSW Police and PCYC NSW, the Fight for Success program focuses on training young people in boxing and promoting physical activity.
From Friday (15 September 2023), the program has launched in Walgett, Bourke, Brewarrina, and Kempsey, with other regional locations to be considered for the rollout.
During these launches, attendees were able to undergo boxing drills, meet with NRL players, and take part in a friendly game of touch football.
Participants will also be able to learn about and meet with officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command, Aviation Command, Youth Command, the Dog and Mounted Unit, and the Recruitment Branch.
Deputy Commissioner Regional NSW Field Operations, Paul Pisanos, said the program shows young people that police are in their corner.
“The Fight for Success initiative is a great source of physical activity and an outlet for many teenagers in these regional communities,” Deputy Commissioner Pisanos said.
“We’re hoping to get young people through the door at PCYC and see what else is on offer for their personal development.
“The important work by our Youth Command and PCYC staff is a collaborative approach to prevent and divert teenagers from criminal activity.”
Minister for Police and Counter-terrorism, Yasmin Catley, said diversion projects such as ‘Fight for Success’ are a crucial part of engaging at-risk youths in regional NSW.
“Sport is the great equaliser, it has the power to break the cycle and that’s exactly what PCYC is doing through targeted programs like Fit for Life and Fit for Work,
“Some of these kids face personal challenges in their local communities but programs like this teach them to channel their energy into a positive, sports environment.
“The NSW Government is committed to providing kids with the tools and support they need to stay out of the justice system and live life to the fullest.”
The Fight for Success aims to complement other youth-focused programs, including Fit for Life and Fit for Work.
