Australia welcomes the final report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Japan’s proposed release of treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The IAEA has found release of the treated water would be consistent with internationally accepted safety standards which ensure the protection of people and the environment. The Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) has reviewed the report and supports its conclusions. The IAEA is the acknowledged international authority on nuclear safety. Australia strongly supports the IAEA’s work around the world in support of nuclear safety and non-proliferation.
Australia acknowledges the extensive engagement between Japan and Pacific Islands Forum members on this issue. We acknowledge the leadership of Pacific Islands Forum Chair, Prime Minister Mark Brown of Cook Islands. We note the IAEA will have an ongoing monitoring role as the proposed release moves forward. We continue to encourage dialogue, transparency, and regard for the IAEA and relevant international safety standards.
