Final report on independent review of Brisbane airspace released

Dept of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications

The final report on the Independent Review of the ‘Brisbane New Parallel Runway Flight Paths Post Implementation Review (PIR)’ has today been released by Airservices Australia.

Led by the technical advisor, Trax International, the review recommends possible improvements across all aspects of the PIR, particularly on opportunities to limit and reduce the impacts of aircraft noise.

The final report includes a series of recommendations focused on:

  • enhancing governance and communication around airspace changes;
  • further maximising the number of flights over water;
  • reducing the frequency and concentration of flights over communities; and
  • optimising the wider Brisbane airspace system to improve aircraft noise outcomes for communities.

The Brisbane Airport Post Implementation Review Advisory Forum – an independent, community-orientated advisory group – has strongly backed the adoption of all of the recommendations, where they are determined to be safe, viable and will provide positive noise mitigation outcomes for the community.

Airservices, which is leading the PIR, will release its response to the report at the end of this month – ahead of community workshops to be held in September.

These consultations will bring together industry and community participants, and will explore the feasibility of and options for implementing the report’s recommendations within the PIR.

The final PIR is expected to be finalised in November.
