Griffith Regional Art Gallery is thrilled to be exhibiting Continuum: Southern Highland Printmakers, a touring exhibition showcasing some of the finest printmakers in the state.
Formed 24 years ago, the Southern Highlands Printmakers is a body of professional artists, with 28 exhibiting members, which has been actively exhibiting throughout New South Wales, Australia and internationally.
Griffith Regional Art Gallery Coordinator, Raymond Wholohan said, “This an exhibition of contemporary prints was created in response to artists of previous generations who have also had connections with the Southern Tablelands region between Sydney and Canberra.
“Each of the current 25 printmakers chose a different artist as the starting point for their own work. Choices ranged from the possum skin cloaks crafted by the original Aboriginal inhabitants of the area, to colonial artists such as Joseph Lycett, to some of the greats of Australian art,” Mr Wholohan said.
“Renowned artists with a connection to the area include Lloyd Rees, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams and Brett Whiteley, as well as photographer Frank Hurley, ceramic artist Gwen Hanson-Piggot, sculptors Tom Bass and Bert Flugelman and assemblage artist Rosalie Gascoigne. The resulting prints brought together in this exhibition are as wide-ranging and diverse as the work of the artists who inspired them.
“Because this exhibition covers such a significant swathe of Australian art history, it will be of great interest to secondary or tertiary students studying art, design or Australian history as well as art and history enthusiasts.
“The artists’ floor talk on Saturday, 13 July will offer a fascinating insight into the work of both current and previous leading Australian artists and the relationships between them.”

Artists’ floor talk and morning tea will be held on Saturday, 13 July at 11am. All welcome. Both events are free.
