Fire and Ice: Winter celebration to heat up City Centre’s night-time economy

Ice skating and fire performances are coming to enliven the City Centre as part of an ACT Government winter celebration to showcase Canberra’s widest variety of food, drink, and retail shops in one place.

City Centre and Braddon businesses are now invited to sign up to Winter in the City: Fire and Ice and feature their products through a digital What’s on Guide that will include deals, events, experiences, and other activities.

The Guide – which will launch on 10 June – will make it easier for locals and visitors to discover new businesses when visiting the City Centre throughout the colder months.

It will also bring together business offerings under the new theme – Fire and Ice – along with key entertainment activities running from 6-21 July (school holidays).

These include:

Fire performances in Garema Place

This year’s celebration will feature nightly displays of fire breathing, twirling and dancing from some of the country’s best fire performers. Local artists will also be on hand to warm up the crowds before the fiery spectacle begins.

Ice rink in Glebe Park

For the first time, theever-popular ice rink will be staged in Glebe Park alongside a separate snow play activity. This will allow friends and families to put on some skates and glide among the park’s beautiful landscape.

Minister for Government Services and Regulatory Reform Tara Cheyne said the celebration would kick start the night-time economy this winter.

“Winter in the City: Fire and Ice shows that there is a lot of to love about the City Centre during the colder months,” Minister Cheyne said.

“The event not only provides unique and exciting experiences for Canberrans and visitors, but also plays a crucial role in supporting our city’s night-time economy.

“By attracting people to the City Centre during the evenings, we’re encouraging them to explore and enjoy Canberra’s diverse offerings of bars, cafes, restaurants and shops – all conveniently located in one place.”

Winter in the City: Fire and Ice is an initiative of the City Renewal Authority co-funded by the City Centre Marketing and Improvements Levy, which is paid by commercial property owners located in the City Centre and Braddon.
