Firefighters tackle Alice Springs bushfire

Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) attended a large bushfire in Alice Springs throughout Sunday and Monday.

More than 30 career and volunteer firefighters were called to the large grassfire in the vicinity of Scobie Road just after 2pm on Sunday.

Firefighters fought the bushfire throughout the afternoon, successfully defending several properties.

The fire moved into an inaccessible area and was monitored throughout the evening by the NTFRS and NT Parks and Wildlife Rangers. Throughout the night the fire impacted several properties in the vicinity of Basso Road, Bitzer Road and the surrounding area.

Throughout Monday NTFRS, Bushfires NT and NT Parks and Wildlife crews continued to battle the fire, with back burning operations and monitoring of the fire ground.

Soon after 1.00pm, firefighters were alerted to a large shed reported to be on fire in an area that had been impacted on Sunday night. Firefighters responded to the location and worked to extinguish the fire. The shed sustained significant damage with most of the structure in flames.

Southern District Officer Stephen Hunter said “After more than 24 hours of firefighting the fire moved north away from infrastructure into the broader Telegraph Station, and was monitored overnight by crews. A fire investigation into this incident is ongoing and we are urging anyone with information to make contact on 131 444.

“You can also make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.”
