New research by Australia Post declares 2024 [1] as the year of enjoying the simple things in life, with Aussies ranking their top five daily joys as:
- Receiving a notification that a parcel has arrived
- Having no tech issues
- Jumping into fresh sheets
- Enjoying a morning coffee and a seamless commute to work came in joint fourth
- Finding a car spot easily
Adding to those feel-good moments, of the 1,000 Australians surveyed by Australia Post, a fifth admitted they are addicted to online shopping and get a dopamine hit when their parcels are delivered.
A nation of shopaholics, almost half of those surveyed get at least one parcel delivered every week and a quarter of people even tell their friends, family or colleagues about each one.
Nearly a fifth of respondents (19%) confessed to skipping the office at least once a week to ensure they are home to receive their deliveries and even wait near the door or regularly look outside in anticipation of its arrival.
Associate Professor of Cyberpsychology Andrew J. Campbell from The University of Sydney said: “Humans love rewards, so small daily joys are the ultimate mood boost, especially when external factors in the world aren’t as controllable. In particular, we get multiple dopamine buzzes when online shopping from browsing our choices to purchasing an item and then getting delivery notifications.
“When paired with the feelings of excitement and anticipation we have for the arrival of a parcel, it’s clear why receiving a notification that a parcel has arrived is ranked the most pleasurable.
“What is really interesting is the psychology of knowing your parcel is on its way and arriving safely is closely linked to trust. Ensuring reliable and accurate information, and timely deliveries will help contribute to the excitement of everyone’s parcel joy as the research by Australia Post found.”
