Flood risk returns for Northern Rivers

NSW SES

NSW again faces a threat of flooding, with heavy rain forecast to impact Northern Rivers communities over the coming days.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting significant unsettled weather from overnight Saturday into Monday. The heavy rainfall is likely to fall across increasingly saturated catchments, with flash and riverine flooding likely.

A flood watch is current for catchments across the Northern Rivers, with major flooding possible in some locations. Residents of the Northern Rivers should prepare now, particularly if they have been impacted by flooding in the past.

Incident Controller, Superintendent Tom Jory, advised people to act early: “While the current predictions are not as severe as earlier this year, low lying areas are still likely to be impacted.”

NSW SES is advising visitors to the Northern Rivers, and those in temporary accommodation to stay aware of the local weather and act early if conditions change. Consider delaying travel plans or moving caravans to higher ground. Several locations have been established for the relocation of motorhomes and caravans:

  • Wollongbar Netball Courts, Elvery Lane, Wollongbar
  • Casino Pony Club grounds Casino Showground, Summerland Way, Casino
  • New Italy Museum complex rest stop M1, New Italy

Local Emergency Operations Controller, NSW Police Force Superintendent Scott Tanner, has thanked the community for their assistance during this time, and has reminded motorists of the dangers of floodwaters.

“We must also remind residents to not enter flood waters. They are extremely dangerous, with debris and strong under currents.”

“The condition of the road underneath can be extremely damaged, the message is simple – if it’s flooded, forget it.”

“Listen to the directions of emergency services – if they are telling you to relocate, please do so. NSW SES, NSW Police, Fire and Rescue NSW and all other agencies are here to support and protect you,” Supt Tanner said.
