Football Australia is proud to add its support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart (Uluru Statement) and stands side by side with First Nations people in calls for a voice and acknowledgment enshrined in the Australian Constitution.
Endorsed in 2017 at the First Nations Constitutional Convention, the Uluru Statement is an invitation to the Australian community to join First Nations people in a movement for a more equitable nation and future – a future where all peoples are valued and heard.
Football Australia CEO, James Johnson, said: “In supporting the Uluru Statement, we are enjoining the voice of the Australian football community, and the rich tapestry of all its people, as we live our ongoing pledge to diversity, equity and inclusion.”
“As a nation, a genuine commitment to Reconciliation starts with the necessary steps of enshrining a First Nations voice in the Australian Constitution, open and honest truth-telling about Australia’s history with First Nations experiences elevated and a process for treaty through a Makarrata Commission.”
As part of its continued journey to reconciliation, Football Australia acknowledges that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures are the oldest surviving continuous cultures in the world and is committed to creating a culture of respect and inclusion across all parts of our game.
Selina Holtze, a Gurindji, Jingili (NT) and Yawuru (WA) woman and Football Australia ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Indigenous Advisory Group member, affirmed the commitment from the governing body.
“Football Australia’s ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Indigenous Advisory Group proudly endorse Football Australia’s support for the Uluru Statement from the Heart and its implementation,” Holtze said.
“The Uluru Statement is amongst a number of urgent calls for systemic change driven by our people. We are committed to continuing to support football in identifying its role in promoting the advancement of civil rights movements with and for First Nations people.”
Football Australia will continue to work closely with its members to determine football’s ongoing role in, and support for the Uluru Statement.
