Football Australia would like to extend its heartfelt congratulations to Tim Cahill AO, following his induction into the prestigious Sport Australia Hall of Fame.
Cahill – who represented the Socceroos on 108 occasions, scoring 50 goals – was inducted alongside six other national sporting icons, signifying his position as a great of Australian sport, not just football.
The four-time FIFA World Cup player was not only recognised for his extensive on-field accomplishments, but the indelible mark he has left on both Australian and world football at large.
Cahill’s international career spanned more than 14 years from his first match for the Socceroos in March 2004 to his last in November 2018, this in addition to more than 200 games for EFL Championship side, Millwall FC and 226 appearances for Everton FC in the English Premier League.
Cahill joins illustrious company with the likes of Sir Donald Bradman, Cathy Freeman OAM, Ian Thorpe AM, Greg Norman AO and Rod Laver AC MBE all members of one of Australia’s most prestigious sporting organisations.
Football Australia CEO, James Johnson said Cahill’s induction to the Hall of Fame was just recognition for his contribution to football in Australia.
“Words can’t do justice to the impact Tim Cahill has had on football in Australia,” Johnson said.
“We have been privileged to witness a truly exceptional career and when looking specifically at the Socceroos, one filled with an immense passion for the green and gold.
“Tim created so many firsts for Australian football and his feats on the pitch were often record-breaking. In a larger sense, it is what those achievements have meant for the wider football community that hold significance. Many of those moments, to which Tim was integral, will go down in Australian sporting folklore and have helped inspire a generation of young footballers.
“Tim’s legacy is profound and this acknowledgment from Sport Australia is well deserved.
“We couldn’t be prouder of this achievement for both Tim and his family, all who have contributed so much to his career,” concluded Johnson.
The inductees will be honoured at a Sport Australia Hall of Fame event to be held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney on October 16.
