Footpath works have been completed along King Street in Paynesville and will improve pedestrian safety for residents in the area.
The East Gippsland Shire Council project is being undertaken by council’s concreting crew. The works crew will now head north along Wellington Street.
When complete, the new footpaths will extend 415 metres along King and Wellington streets and will fill in some gaps in the existing network.
Acting Director Operations Fiona Weigall said a street’s need for a footpath is assessed and prioritised under council’s Access and Mobility Framework.
“The need for footpaths that look to fill gaps and meet the needs of our community are assessed throughout the shire. We recognise the importance of providing footpaths so people young and old can stay active and walk to services,” Ms Weigall said.
“Given the proportion of Paynesville’s population of retirement age and the important link these pieces of pathway provide to access school, sporting facilities and the town centre, the works were given a high priority,” Ms Weigall said.
The concreting crew has received many favourable comments from passersby about the King Street footpaths and how it will improve accessibility and connectivity within the town.
