Throughout NAIDOC Week there will be a range of local events and activities to acknowledge the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
The 2023 NAIDOC theme ‘For our Elders’, celebrates the cultural knowledge holders, trailblazers, nurturers, advocates, teachers, survivors, leaders, hard workers and loved ones who have paved the way for future generations.
“During NAIDOC week, we take the time to recognise and appreciate the immense knowledge and resilience of our Elders,” said Mayor Amanda Findley.
“Together, let’s show our gratitude and respect for our Elders as we learn from their wisdom and work towards a brighter future,” said Cr Findley.
With a range of exciting local events lined up, Council invites everyone to join in and pay homage to the culture and achievements of our Aboriginal communities.
Kicking off the week is Council’s NAIDOC Week launch morning tea and flag raising ceremony on Monday 3 July at 10am outside the civic centre.
Shoalhaven NAIDOC Family Fun Day will be held on Wednesday 5 July, from 10am to 2pm, at the Nowra Showground with plenty of activities for kids; information stalls; jumping castles; hot food; live entertainment; prizes; petting zoo, and a VR flight simulator.
Local Government Regional NAIDOC Awards ceremony will be held on Saturday 29 July in Kiama. Community is encouraged to submit their nominations which close on Friday 30 June. This provides everyone with a chance to recognise deserving individuals and projects in categories such as Aboriginal Elders of the Year; Aboriginal Community Representative of the Year; Aboriginal Young Achievers of the Year; Aboriginal Community Volunteer of the Year; Aboriginal Organization or Project of the Year, and Outstanding Contribution to Reconciliation (Aboriginal or Non-Aboriginal).
