The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) is pleased to announce it has appointed Tim Marney as its Chief Economist.
Mr Marney will provide strategic advice on the economic environment affecting the mining and resources sector in Western Australia and be responsible for economic analysis and policy development, as well as thought leadership.
CME Chief Executive Officer Rebecca Tomkinson said with more than 30 years’ experience in economics, finance, public policy and administration, health and human services, Mr Marney’s appointment would bolster the strength of CME’s policy and advocacy team.
“Tim’s appointment will reinforce the credibility of our economic analysis and commentary on the mining and resources sector in Western Australia, relating to commodity prices, cost and incentive structures, investment trends, and global economic conditions,” she said.
“At a time when our sector continues to pour billions into the national and state economy, and is positioning itself as a key player in the global transition to net zero thanks to our abundance of critical minerals, having Tim’s strategic leadership skills and economic expertise will be an invaluable asset to the team.”
Mr Marney served as the Western Australian Under Treasurer for almost a decade, leading reform of the state’s finances, intergovernmental relations, revenues, procurement, shared services, public works and strategic projects. This was followed by over five years in the role of Mental Health Commissioner of WA.
Mr Marney also served on the Beyond Blue board of Directors from 2008 to 2019, was Deputy Chair from 2011 to 2019. He also served on the board of the Western Australian Treasury Corporation, as Chair and Deputy Chair, for over ten years. He is currently a board member of Reconciliation WA and has been Chair of the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre Advisory Board since 2014 and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of the Faculty of Business and Law, Curtin University. He is also currently Chair of the board of Richmond Wellbeing, WA’s largest community mental health support service provider.
Mr Marney joins CME after three and a half years as a Principal and Chief economist at Nous Group, an international management consulting firm.
In a further boost to its economics team, CME has also appointed Aaron Walker as its new Manager of Industry Competitiveness and Economics.
Mr Walker has more than 10 years of experience across macroeconomic and financial roles, including as a Senior Economist at the Reserve Bank of Australia, and Project Analyst at Westfarmers. In his more recent role at the RBA, Aaron lead the Western Australian business engagement team and as part of this outreach function, gained valuable insights into industry sentiment, outlook and the operating environment of many of CME’s member companies.
Mr Marney and Mr Walker both commence at CME on Monday, 3 July 2023.
