Liverpool City Council is investing in workers of the future through a six-month pilot project with the CSIRO called Generation STEM.
The program partners groups of year 9 students with local industry to work on challenges aimed at inspiring further study and careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
Liverpool Mayor Wendy Waller said STEM skills were vital for Liverpool’s future workforce.
“The initiative aims to inspire the next generation and create a highly skilled workforce to meet the demand of current and future jobs,” Mayor Waller said
“As Western Sydney International Airport and the Aerotropolis develop, there will be a multitude of opportunities for people with STEM skills.
“We will work with several local high schools in this pilot and I can’t wait to see what the students come up with.”
Students engaged in the program will work on projects, which Council will showcase at the end of the year.
Lawrence Hargrave School information and communications technology co-ordinator Ken Chan said Generation STEM represented an amazing opportunity for the school’s students.
“Lawrence Hargrave School is involved with Generation STEM because it involves a range of workplaces and skills that can be positive for the students at our school,” Mr Chan said.
“We are always searching for new ways to promote students’ academic engagement and teach skills that can be used in future jobs and potential careers.”
Students will also attend web-based masterclasses and visit workplaces to meet STEM professionals to learn about STEM career opportunities.
“Generation STEM takes an industry-led and community driven approach, ensuring tailored programs address local employer requirements and equip young people with the relevant skills to secure local jobs,” Mayor Waller said.
The NSW Government made a 10-year, $25 million endowment to the Science and Industry Endowment Fund (SIEF) to establish Generation STEM throughout western Sydney.
CSIRO Chief Executive Dr Larry Marshall is the trustee for the SIEF.
“CSIRO solves Australia’s greatest challenges through innovative science and technology,” Dr Marshall said.
“Through this endowment to SIEF, the Generation STEM partnership will inspire tomorrow’s STEM leaders and grow Australia’s future success and prosperity.”
