Framework to help conserve more of our precious places agreed

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

Environment Ministers has agreed to the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) Framework.

OECMs, also known as Conserved Areas, provide opportunities to recognise conservation of biodiversity in areas beyond formal Protected Areas such as national parks.

Both Protected Areas and Conserved Areas can contribute to Australia’s national target to protect and conserve 30% of land by 2030. This is known as the ’30 by 30′ target.

We worked closely with state and territory governments to develop the framework.

It complements which underpins our efforts to protect our native species, ecosystems, cultural values and unique landscapes for future generations.

The OECMs Framework:

  • identifies principles to guide recognition of areas
  • provides information on implementation of these principles
  • includes a site assessment tool for landholders to use to determine whether their land meets the requirements for a Conserved Area.

The framework ensures that high-quality Conserved Areas are recognised in Australia.

Through our Nature Positive work, we are protecting and conserving more of what’s precious.

Agreement to the framework is a significant milestone in delivering on the Australian Government’s national 30 by 30 target.
