The delivery of the largest ever health infrastructure investment in Melbourne’s south-east is on track, with main works on the Allan Labor Government’s Frankston Hospital redevelopment passing the halfway point.
Minister for Health Infrastructure Mary-Anne Thomas today inspected progress on $1.1 billion redevelopment where crews have now finished pouring concrete slabs for the first seven floors of the new clinical services tower.
The tower’s core can now be spotted in the Frankston skyline, reaching its final height of 12 storeys, while elsewhere on site, construction on the new seven level multi-deck carpark has also reached its highest point.
Work is now underway on the car park structure’s façade as well as the installation of services on the lower floors which will be opened for Peninsula Health staff to use in coming months.
Since major construction started in June 2022, crews have completed more than 700,000 hours of work – pouring 29,000 cubic meters of concrete and installing 4,000 tonnes of steel to transform the site.
The project will create a new 12-storey tower of clinical services delivering 130 more beds, new spaces for mental health and cancer treatment services and 15 new operating theatres.
Hardworking staff are already enjoying benefits of the redevelopment, with teams transitioning into new administrative spaces – upgraded as part of the emergency department refurbishment and expansion.
These works will now focus on construction of a new short stay unit and emergency department entrance.
Once complete, the redevelopment will ensure the hospital can treat 35,000 more patients each year – cutting wait times and reducing pressure on nearby hospitals.
With more families choosing to call the area home, the project will also deliver expanded women’s and children’s services, including new maternity, obstetrics and paediatric wards, a women’s clinic and a special care nursery.
The redevelopment is also providing a major boost to the local economy, supporting up to 1,700 jobs during construction.
Overseen by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA), in partnership with Peninsula Health and the Exemplar Health consortium, main works are expected to be completed in late 2025 before opening in 2026.
