Free composting workshops: learn to cut food waste by half

Did you know that almost 50 per cent of the average Maroondah household’s waste bin is food waste?

If you’d love to reuse your assorted kitchen and vegetable scraps but not sure where to start, our upcoming composting workshops are just what you need.

Council is offering a beginner compost, worm farm and Bokashi (odour-reducing fermentation bins) workshops to encourage residents to recycle their food waste.

Councillor and chair of the Maroondah Environment Advisory Committee, Marijke Graham, said more and more residents are discovering the benefits of composting.

“With so many residents now composting, we have diverted about 125,300 kilograms of food waste from landfill. Recent waste audits also show that the average amount of food waste from one Maroondah household has reduced by two kilograms per week,” Cr Graham said.

“These workshops will provide you with all the information you need to set up and maintain a compost bin, a worm farm and a Bokashi system at home, as well as all the tips on how you can turn your waste into a resource for your garden,” she said.

“Encouraging our community to compost is one way we are working to divert as much waste from landfill as possible, and in turn reducing our greenhouse gas emissions,” Cr Graham said.

All workshop participants will receive a free home kitchen caddy to help with collecting kitchen food waste.
