To encourage customers to return to Box Hill to shop and dine and support traders through the impacts of coronavirus, Whitehorse City Council is offering free parking in selected on-street parking areas in Box Hill each Saturday between 10am and 2pm, from 7 March until 25 April.
“Box Hill is an important business and cultural precinct. It has a unique character that contributes something special to our municipality. Council is working in partnership with our local traders to support them at this time,” Whitehorse Mayor, Cr Sharon Ellis said.
“Traders in Box Hill have seen a large downturn in trade as a result of coronavirus (COVID-19) and Council is encouraging people to visit the area and support the local community.
“Box Hill is as safe and healthy place to shop as anywhere else in Melbourne. Come out this long weekend and enjoy the array of retail outlets, restaurants and cafes on offer.”
Council’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr Wendy Bissenger said people should go about their normal activities, including attend festivals, go shopping and eat in restaurants.
“The likelihood of infection in an open-air environment, such as a shopping centre or sporting facility is very small. People should be aware of the risks, take the normal measures you would on any other day and continue to participate in our happy, healthy, thriving community.” Dr Bissenger said.
Free parking will apply to the following locations:
- Whitehorse Road south between Station Street and Clisby Court
- Whitehorse Road median strip off-street car park (i.e. tram terminus)
- Station Street from Whitehorse Road to Harrow Street
- Carrington Road from Station Street to Thurston Street
- Cambridge Street from Station Street to Thurston Street
Council-metered parking is free in the Box Hill CBD after 6pm every day.
