Freight Hub on move

The City of Whittlesea welcomes news that purchase of land for the Inland Rail intermodal terminal in Beveridge has been completed and that designs are progressing.

Chair Administrator Lydia Wilson said an announcement by National Intermodal that 1100 hectares of land had been purchased.

“We are pleased to see work continuing towards delivery of this important project,” she said.

“The intermodal freight terminal is expected to deliver an enormous boost to local employment with some 20,000 jobs required for both construction and ongoing operations and it will contribute $3.5 billion to the economy each year.”

In a statement released on 22 June 2023, The Australian-Government owned National Intermodal Corporation said it had completed the transaction to acquire the site in Beveridge.

It said it was progressing concept design and seeking planning approvals with plans to have a preliminary terminal available to receive trains by 2025 with full operation by 2028-29.

The project has been one of the City of Whittlesea’s priority advocacy projects due to its ability to generate jobs, contribute to the local economy and reduce local road congestion.
