Fresh thinking needed on youth offending

New data has highlighted the need for a fresh approach to address youth crime in Victoria.

Every young Victorian deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful life that makes a positive contribution to the community around them.

data revealed that offences committed by young people aged 10 to 14 increased by 37.7 per cent over the past year, while overall youth crime is up 18 per cent.

These trends are deeply concerning and demonstrate the need for greater action to keep at-risk young Victorians connected with the education system, community and job opportunities so they have the best chance to stay on the right path.

The Liberals and ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾s understand the importance of this aspect of criminal justice, and have created a dedicated portfolio to challenge the Andrews Labor Government’s record on youth issues, and to provide a better approach to reform of Victoria’s criminal justice system.

Shadow Minister for Youth Justice, Brad Battin, said fresh thinking was needed to better support young offenders.

“This concerning data once again proves Daniel Andrews and his tired government has no plan to tackle the true causes of youth crime or to get young Victorians in the system back on the right path,” Mr Battin said.

“More of the same isn’t working. It is time for a fresh approach and new ideas to support young Victorians to be the best versions of themselves.”
