Funding support for country sports stars to compete at highest levels

  • Applications open for funding to help regional athletes travel and compete at regional, State and national events
  • McGowan Government’s Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme helps country athletes compete against the best
  • Country Western Australia’s best regional athletes are encouraged to apply for the latest round of the McGowan Government’s travel and accommodation scheme to assist with the cost of competing at sporting competitions.

The Athlete Travel Subsidy Scheme (ATSS) helps country athletes with the cost of competing at regional, State and national competitions – easing the extra burden faced by regional competitors compared to those from the city.

The scheme supports country athletes who have progressed into the high-performance pathway of their chosen sports.

Eligible regional athletes can receive funding to assist with out-of-pocket travel and accommodation expenses related to competitions and programs.

For guidelines and an online application visit the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries website at

Applications for the current round of funding close September 13, 2019.

As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:

“The ATSS ensures country athletes aiming to compete against the best are given that bit of extra help to deal with the tyranny of distance and the other challenges faced by regional competitors.

“Talented regional athletes on high performance pathways aged between 13 and 21 are strongly encouraged apply for funding under the ATSS.

“Many of our sporting champions come from regional WA and the scheme is specifically designed to help our young athletes in a variety of sports to compete at higher levels.

“Anyone from the country knows the extra challenges young sportspeople face – and we hope the ATSS provides that extra bit of help for parents and clubs wanting their athletes to develop their skills so they can reach their full potential.”
