Following a public Expressions of Interest process, the City of Launceston will next week consider the future of a historic former kindergarten at 56 Frederick St.
The building was transferred to the Council’s ownership in 1885 by Reverand William Price and was used for childhood education until 2023 when the property’s last tenant vacated the site.
In September last year the Council opened an Expressions of Interest process seeking submissions for the sale, lease or development of the property.
Sixteen submissions were received, with one subsequently withdrawn, leaving a total of 15.
At is meeting on December 14 last year, the Council further resolved that the property would not be sold, and that two of the submissions would therefore be excluded from the assessment process.
The remaining 13 submissions were assessed against weighted criteria, with the individual applicants provided an opportunity to respond to detailed questions about their submissions.
Ultimately, the Launceston History Centre’s submission scored the highest in the assessment process.
At next week’s meeting, Council officers have recommended that the Launceston History Centre’s submission be selected as the Council’s preferred proposal for the future use of the site, and that a lease
agreement be developed for consideration at a future Council meeting.
