Orange Regional Gallery will host a major work by internationally acclaimed artist William Kentridge from 26 March to 26 June.
The large-scale, eight-screen video installation I am not me, the horse is not mine is regarded as one of the South African artist’s most ambitious and celebrated moving image works and is arguably the most significant work by the artist in an Australian museum collection.
The work was gifted to the Art Gallery of New South Wales by Anita and Luca Belgiorno-Nettis in 2017. It premiered at the 16th Biennale of Sydney in 2008 and was then displayed at the Tanks at the UK’s Tate Modern in 2013.

The exhibition incorporates stop-motion animation, live action, archival video, and a soundtrack by acclaimed South African composer Philip Miller.
The exhibition will launch at Orange Regional Gallery as the Autumn feature, coinciding with the Orange F.O.O.D Festival. It will then move to Griffith University Art Museum in Queensland.
Orange Mayor Jason Hamling said this was an opportunity to experience a major work by one of the world’s most celebrated living artists, right here in Orange.
“Our regional galleries do a fantastic job of bringing a diverse range of exhibitions out into our communities and when the opportunity comes along to view works of this calibre by such an influential artist, you can’t miss it,” Cr Hamling said.
Kentridge’s artworks can be found in the collections of major museums around the world including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Tate, London; Solomon R Guggenheim Museum, New York; Israel Museum, Jerusalem; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Gallery of Canada, Ottawa; Haus der Kunst, Munich; and the ³Ô¹ÏÍøÕ¾ Gallery of Australia, Canberra.
“This extraordinary exhibition will be a drawcard for the gallery during F.O.O.D Week, as well as bringing people from all over the Central West to experience it while it is on display in Orange,” Cr Hamling said.
A documentary on the artist will also be screened in the New Gallery’s Theatre at Orange Regional Gallery alongside the exhibition.
I am not me, the horse is not mine will be officially opened at 6pm on Friday 25 March by Dr Michael Brand, Director of the Art Gallery of New South Wales.
Nicholas Chambers, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary International Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, will present a floor talk at 11am on Saturday 26 March.
Free tickets for both events are available from Eventbrite. Orange Regional Gallery is open every day from 10am to 4pm.
