Galley Museum Gains ‘white i’ Tourist Accreditation

The West Coast Council in partnership with the Galley Museum Committee are happy to announce that the Galley Museum is now a white i information centre.

This development is in line with strategies adopted in the West Coast Community Plan 2025, which aim to develop a resilient and strong tourism sector in the region.

The white i accreditation sees the Galley Museum recognised as a part of the Tasmanian Visitor Information Network, alongside the Council-operated yellow i Visitor Information Centre in Strahan

“Great work is already being done by volunteers to ensure that the Galley Museum is an attractive tourist destination,” West Coast Council General Manager David Midson said. “Now with this accreditation visitors and locals can not only view the West Coast’s rich history at the site but will also have access to visitor information about other great locations on the West Coast.”

The accreditation will also see a stronger partnership developed with the Visitor Information Centre in Strahan, with support available for customer service training, provision of emergency information and retail skills.

“We are excited to formalise information services and in turn increase exposure of the Museum,” President of the museum management committee Stan Burns said. “Becoming formally accredited allows access to greater resources in order to maximise potential for tourist and local traffic, not just to the Museum but across Queenstown and the West Coast.”

The current practice of charging an entry fee for those wanting to go through the museum will be retained but there will be no cost for anyone seeking visitor information.

An information session for West Coast tourism operators and Queenstown businesses will be held Friday 14 June at 2pm. The session will provide further explanation of the white i certification and provide an opportunity for local stakeholders to tour the Galley Museum to see what the site has to offer.

The West Coast Council congratulates those involved in gaining this accreditation and encourages locals and visitors alike to stop by the Galley Museum next time you are in town!
