The 16th annual Geelong Children’s Week returns later this month with a mixture of in-person and digital events.
With more than 25 events on offer across the region, Children’s Week provides children and their parents the opportunity to connect with community organisations in their local areas in a fun and engaging way.
The program runs from Saturday 23 October to Sunday 31 October, and activities range from virtual performances through to in-person events celebrating arts and culture activities.
Highlights include:
- a virtual show by local children’s performers, The Mik Maks
- a day of activities at Milla Milla playgroup celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture
- a virtual performance by magician Dazzling Dan at the Botanical Gardens and
- an online session of songs and stories with Granny Lee and her ukulele.
The program includes several at-home activities, including art and craft kits from the National Wool Museum and the Grovedale Toy Library and a Healthy at Home toolkit, with hints and tips for families to stay well during lockdowns.
This year’s Children’s Week activities focus on Delama yerram baa kale-werango, which means to embrace with nature and outdoors in the language of the Wadawurrung People, Traditional Owners of this land.
One of the ways we are encouraging children to embrace nature is to enter the Nature Faces competition.
Children are invited to make a self-portrait from fallen leaves, branches and feathers they have collected while exploring their neighbourhoods and submit their artwork for the public to vote for their favourites.
The winning submissions will be made into a digital faces quilt and shared online for everyone to enjoy.
