George Bass Drive at Lilli Pilli will not reopen today as planned.
Moisture has been detected under the surface of the road pavement seal in a small section of the new road, meaning the surface may become unsafe.
Assessments are underway now and more testing will take place before determining any treatments to be implemented in the morning. The road will stay closed until at least 4pm Friday 24 December.
It is hoped the road will open for Christmas once testing and any holding treatments are complete tomorrow.
A spokesperson for Council said this is a disappointing outcome, but not uncommon when roads are built during prolonged wet weather.
The $4.65 million project has been funded by the Federal government to remove dangerous bends at Grandfathers Gully, near Lilli Pilli.
