Georges River Council is proud to announce significant advancements in its environmental sustainability efforts, having achieved key targets ahead of schedule.
Georges River Mayor Sam Elmir said Council had achieved a significant reduction in carbon emissions, with a 69% reduction since FY 21/22, marking a major milestone in Council’s progress towards its goal of net zero carbon emissions in Council’s operations by the year 2025.
Council’s progress includes a 78% reduction in emissions since the baseline year of 2016/17, achieved through the delivery of initiatives such as transitioning Council’s fleet to electric and hybrid vehicles, installing solar panels on Council buildings, and a move to ban the installation of gas and gas-powered infrastructure in new Council-built, owned, or managed assets unless no viable alternative exists.
“Georges River Council remains focused on its 2025 goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions in our operations. Our commitment to a sustainable future is evident in our remarkable achievement of reducing operational carbon emissions by 69% since last fiscal year,” Mayor Elmir said.
“This is not just about meeting targets; it’s about leading by example in our community. Our actions, like the ban on gas installations in new Council facilities, reflect our deep commitment to environmental sustainability.”
The substantial decrease follows Council’s successful completion of its goal of powering all operations with 100% renewable energy, a goal reached three years ahead of the planned 2025 target.
“Georges River Council’s emissions reductions are in part a result of our decision to switch to a 100% renewable energy contract, which was underpinned by Council’s ongoing dedication to environmental stewardship,” Mayor Elmir said.
Mayor Elmir said Council’s comprehensive approach to emissions reduction has included replacing streetlights with LEDs and participating in a regional contract to maximise renewable energy procurement.
Depending on the availability of a budget in 2024/2025 Council will seek an independent review of its carbon offsetting strategy, including an independent emissions and carbon offsetting reporting review.
Plans for the upcoming financial year include a continued transition to a sustainable fleet, further expanding solar panel installations, and further energy efficiency measures.
