The German Navy has recognised the service of its antipodean comrades by presenting all 31 Australian competitors with a special keepsake at Invictus Games Dusseldorf 2023.
Speaking on behalf of the naval arm of the German armed forces, Kapitänleutnant Nicky Büttner, thanked the Aussie contingent for making the trip to Düsseldorf and embodying the true spirit of Invictus.
The gift of a poem, Anker (Anchor), by Veronica Scholz, a letter and tea light candle honours the contribution of each and every team member.
“Thank you for being a good example, and a champion for other people. Just the way you are.
“You are invictus. We are invictus,” said the letter.
The tribute was much appreciated by team member, James Barker.
“It’s touching recognition by the German Navy, offering a sense of inclusion and friends for life,” said James.
“Going into the Games I had no idea what to expect, but it’s tremendous we can all come together, united, and support everyone. Everyone is here to support their mates.
“The main thing I get out of being at the Games is that whatever our years of service – whether it’s one year or 20 – it doesn’t matter. It’s just special that we’re here recognising ourselves.
“Having our family and friends here makes the Games even more special,” he said.
The Invictus Games is an international adaptive multi-sports competition for serving and former serving military personnel who have been wounded, injured or become ill during their military service.
Invictus Games Düsseldorf is being held from 9-16 September 2023.
