Get into litter action

Bayside’s five beach patrol groups have been busy over summer collecting litter left by visitors or washed up along the shore.

The Hampton Beach Patrol group, started in 2014 by Elizabeth Anthony with support from mum Wendy and sister Nikki, looks after the stretch of foreshore from Small Street to the dog beach at Green Point.

The family is joined by up to 10 volunteers each month who spend an hour picking up litter.

“In January we collected 20kgs of litter made up of glass bottles, cans, straws coffee cups, cigarette and soft plastic,” Elizabeth said.

Check out Beach Patrol’s new Litter Stopper app, and use it to record the type and amount of litter you collect. Data is sent to the Australian Marine Debris Database.
